Larchmont Preschool is a Reggio and Waldorf-inspired school for children from 2 to 5 years in a home setting.  Our curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, which encourages young children and their teachers to explore, question, and discover in a stimulating environment. Children express interests and ideas, research for further information, reflect on the experience and form conclusions. Through this process, children develop confidence and independence with encouragement from parents, teachers and community members.

Our Reggio-inspired curriculum is flexible and emerges from children’s ideas, thoughts and observations. Children identify what they want to learn more about: airplanes, worms, emotions, construction, reptiles, rainbows, or anything else that captures their interest and imagination.  Teachers use the classroom and outdoor environments to provoke new experiences and inspire learning. Parents are encouraged to continue these conversations with their children at home, or to participate in the classroom as volunteers.

In addition, our school environment incorporate many aspects of Waldorf education, including a warm, home-like environment, natural open-ended learning materials, predictable organic daily rhythms, outdoor time, integration of art into learning, and strong encouragement of imaginative play.

We also strongly believe in a mixed-age grouping and a small child to teacher ratio.

At Larchmont Preschool, we believe that the best way for children to learn is through play.  We use a child’s natural interests to develop the skills that will be needed in kindergarten.  Most importantly, we strive to develop a lifelong enthusiasm for learning.

“Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.”
 Friedrich Froebel
